Myopterus

Myopterus is a bat species from the family of bulldog bats ( Molossidae ). The genus includes two species that live in the middle of Africa.

The bats of this genus are distinguished from other bulldog bats by the short and rounded ears, a long snout and laterally arranged nostrils. They reach a body length 56-66 mm, which must be added a 25 to 33 millimeters long tail comes. Their fur is dark brown at the top and at the bottom bright red to yellowish- white in color.

About their life little is known. You are likely to be residents of the rainforests and predominantly solitary life. During the day they sleep in tree hollows or hidden under leaves. At night they look for food, and they mainly prey on insects.

There are two types:

  • Myopterus daubentonii is distributed from Senegal to the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo and feeds on hard-shelled prey.
  • Myopterus whitleyi comes from Ghana to Uganda before and eaten softer prey than M. daubentonii.
