Myrhorod (pig)

The Myrhoroder pig ( Ukrainian: Mиpгopoдcькa, Myrhorodska; Russian: Mиpгopoдcкaя, Mirgorodskaja ) is a fat pig breed from Ukraine.

Breeding history

The breed was bred near the city Myrhorod in the Poltava Oblast in Ukraine under the direction of AF Bondarenko by Ukrainian kurzohrige stained pig sows with boars of the breeds Berkshire pig, Large White, Middle White and Tamworth pig were crossed. 1940 the breed was officially recognized.

Characteristics

  • Color mostly black tabby (colorful), rarely black, red-black tabby or red
  • Head medium in size with slightly bulging nose
  • Ears small, standing, rarely with kink- forming to the front tip
  • Chest broad
  • Back straight and wide
  • Foundation of strong, medium length; Feet shorter than the Large White
  • Skin hard, elastic and without wrinkles
  • Distributed bristles and tightly over the body
  • Weight 217 kg sows, boars 275 kg
  • Time to 100 kg: 220 days
  • Good fit to the Ukrainian steppe climate and chucks

There are 11 sire lines and 34 sows families. The breed is often used for crossbreeding both of father and mother as well as race.

Occurrence

Main breeding centers are Peremoga and Decembrist in the Poltava Oblast. The race is held mainly in Ukraine. In 1980, 136,800 purebred animals the total number.
