5-hydroxy- N- methyltryptamine (abbreviated N-methyl serotonin), also Norbufotenin is an alkaloid from the family of tryptamine. It is a derivative of serotonin. The art is also the name N? Methyl serotonin, to distinguish it from tryptamine derivative compounds in which a methyl group to the nitrogen atom of the indole group is attached.
N- methyl serotonin is found in plants, animals and fungi, including Actaea racemosa ( Black Cohosh ), Zanthoxylum piperitum ( Sichuan pepper ), Litoria aurea ( gold tree frog ) and Amanita mushrooms ( Amanita ).
From the pharmacological point of view, N-methyl serotonin binding to several serotonin receptors, including the 5-HT1A and 5 -HT7 receptors with high affinity (IC50 ≤ 2 nM) and selectivity. In addition to the serotonergic activity of the compound also acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.
