After the outbreak of the Second World War in 1941 the new community served as a hiding place for guerrilla fighters and some remaining U.S. organizations. However, during the Japanese occupation fled the fighters and many civilians from Nabunturan and the place became a stronghold of the Japanese garrison Kampetai.

After the war ended in 1945, American troops in Davao City and the Philippine Civil Assistance Unit ( PCAU ) established a civil government for a Compostela in the field of Nabunturan, since the place is an access point to and from Davao City. During the following years Nabunturan became a trading center and a control center of various government services. For this reason, soon came to the need to transform the place into a separate municipality. A wish that was eventually supported by high-ranking politicians.
