Nagorno-Karabakh constitutional referendum, 2006

A constitutional referendum was held in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno Karabakh on 10 December 2006 to adopt a draft constitution for the country, which should define the Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state Artsakh.

The Republic of Azerbaijan under its President Ilham Aliyev condemned the referendum and declared it to an unconstitutional attempt to undermine the peace process. The referendum was also condemned by the GUAM group among Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova and Azerbaijan, as well as by the European Parliament (see caviar diplomacy ).

The new Constitution of the Nagorno-Karabakh was approved by 99.28 % of voters, with a turnout of 87 percent.
