Nahant [ nəhʌnt ] is a residential community in Essex County in the U.S. state of Massachusetts with 3,632 inhabitants ( 2000).

History

The indigenous people of the area called the " Nahant " peninsula, which means as much as " headland " or " almost an island ". Nahant extends into the Massachusetts Bay as a rocky peninsula. In the past it was often used by the inhabitants of the western city of Lynn as a grazing ground for cattle, sheep and goats. In 1803 the first hotel was built here and in 1817 there was a daily service by steam boat to and from Boston. Administratively, the church exists only since 1853. Late 19th century, the peninsula has developed into a leisure and recreational destination. Among other things, here is the first amusement park in the area was built. During the Second World War, a Emplacement of coastal artillery had been built on the east side. Now there is the community park and the site of the Marine Science Center of Boston University.

Geography

According to American statistics authority, the municipality is 40.1 km ². However, this only affects 3.2 km ² land area, the rest is water. The peninsula is only connected by a causeway to the " mainland city " Lynn.

Demography

The census in 2000 provided for Nahant following results: In 1629 households lived 3,632 inhabitants. Of the 970 households were family households. These households were distributed over 1,704 residential buildings.

In the village live almost exclusively White ( 97.11 %).

Among households, there were 49.4 % married couples, 7.8% of single parent households and 33.8 % of all households. The proportion of single-person households of elderly people was 11.7 %.

The average household size was 2.2 inhabitants; the average family strength was 2.85 inhabitants.

The age structure of the population of Nahant yielded a mean age of 45 years. The proportion of under 18 year olds is 18.6 %, that of the over 65 -year-olds 19.4 %. For every 100 females population were 86.7 male inhabitants.

The median household income was U.S. $ 64 052, the median family income was $ 76,926. Men had significantly higher incomes than women: $ 52,045 to $ 46,522. Below the poverty line lived 1.4 % of families and 2.6% of the total population. The proportion of under 18 year-olds was 2.7 % and that of the over-65s 2.0%.

Education

Nahant has no secondary school. Up to the 6th grade students visit the Johnson Elementary School in Nahant. Students in grades 7-12 go to Swampscott and visit the Swampscott High School.

Tourist Attractions

  • The annual " Fourth of July " fireworks, which many locals say it is the best in the Boston area
  • The annually held since 1996 Christmas Parade is one of the largest and most important events of the community.
  • As a de facto island Nahant has no shortage of beaches. Therefore Nahant is also a crowded resort.
