Nahum Sonenberg

Nahum Sonenberg (born 29 December 1946 in Wetzlar ) is an Israeli- Canadian biochemist and professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Life

Sonenberg earned a Bachelor and a Masters in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Tel Aviv, and in 1976 a Ph.D. at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. As a postdoctoral fellow he worked at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, New Jersey. Since 1979 he has been at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he (as of 2011 ) is a professor of biochemistry today.

Sonenberg is married and has two daughters.

Work

Sonenberg identified the eIF4E protein, which is part of the 5 'cap structure of mRNA and discovered the IRES mechanism for initiation of translation in eukaryotes, and the cap -dependent regulation of translation by eIF4E -binding protein ( 4E- BP). He was the proto-oncogene eIF4E character of the show and that rapamycin ( sirolimus) inhibits the eIF4E protein ( see mTOR ). Studies performed on 4E -BP knockout mice Sonnenberg and co-workers demonstrated that eIF4E plays an important role in the metabolism of adipose tissue in innate immunity and in processes of learning and memory.

Further investigations deal with virology: poliovirus, rhinoviruses, and human immunodeficiency virus ( HIV).
