Brantley County

Nahunta is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in Brantley County and is its administrative headquarters.

Geography

Nahunta is centrally located in Brantley County. The nearby towns are Hoboken, Waynesville and Patterson. The nearest major town, Jacksonville, is located about 105 kilometers south-east, the capital of Georgia, Atlanta, about 423 kilometers north-west. The city covers an area of 7.7 km ².

Population

The population is 930, of which 47.8 % men and 52.2 % women (as of 2000). Compared to the 1990 census, the population has declined by 11.3 %. The average age of the citizens of Nahunta is 35.3 years. 24.3 % of residents are African American and 74.3 % White. In 1999, the average annual per capita income was $ 12,790, considerably lower than the U.S. average ( $ 21,587 ). Approximately 30.1% of the total population and 22 % of families are below the poverty line. Thus, the share of the poor is much higher than the national average.
