NamPower

Namibia Power Corporation ( NamPower only usually short ) is a Namibian state-owned enterprises and national power producer in the country. The Company was founded in 1990 from the 1964 South West Africa Water and Electricity Co-operation ( SWAWEK ) and is under the management of the Namibian Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Infrastructure

At the time of Namibia's independence in 1990, there were public electricity networks in the cities. Through intensive development of the network, numerous villages and rural areas ( farms) are now connected to the public grid by NamPower.

NamPower has electricity power plants ( currently water, coal, diesel) and the necessary infrastructure for the distribution of the current. The current distribution is for the five Regional Electricity Distributors ( RED ) (Local electricity distribution companies) as a subsidiary of NamPower.

Currently, up to 85% of the electricity needs of Namibia ensured by cheap imports from Eskom in South Africa. These contracts expire by the end of 2011, so that Namibia is looking for alternative power sources and seeks the expansion of existing power plants and the construction of new power plants.
