Nanda Empire

The Nandareich was founded in the mid-4th century BC in Magadha in northeast India. Despite its short life, it is high, as it prepared the ground for the Maurya with its political, financial and military measures. The first Nanda was Mahapadma, supposedly the son of a Shishunaga - king with a Shudra woman or even that of a barber and a courtesan, which was equivalent to a low origin. He annihilated the Kshatriyas, that is, the nobility and the former royal houses; his eight sons followed him on the throne. The nine Nanda were in the later literature as the epitome of greed: It is said that they pressed out the gold from foreign countries and from its own people, suggesting a rigorous tax collection. Your army should have counted, according to Curtius Rufus 200,000 foot soldiers, 20,000 horsemen, 2,000 chariots and 3,000 elephants. In a later inscription also the conquest of Kalinga is mentioned, which is the present-day Orissa. The Nandareich was replaced by Greek and Indian sources shortly after Alexander's invasion of India by the Mauryareich under Chandragupta and his mentor, Kautilya.
