Kalinga (India)

Kalinga was a Kingdom in east central India, which covered the area of present-day Orissa and northern parts of the adjoining Andhra Pradesh in about. The largest city in the field Kalingas was Sisupalgarh. It was a fertile area, stretching from the Damodar to Godavari and from Bay of Bengal to the west.

In this area Ashoka led by 265 BC the Kalingakrieg. Kalinga is mentioned in the Mahabharata.

The Kalingaschrift goes back to the Brahmi script and continued to develop the Oriya script, which originated around 1000. Because of the close connection to Brahmischrift this is therefore within the Indian script circle the one that comes the closest Brahmischrift.
