NAOTS

NAOTS ( Naval Aviation Ordnance Test Station or Naval Air Ordnance Test Station ) was a base for the U.S. Navy near the town of Chincoteague in the U.S. state of Virginia. The station was a secret part of the Naval Auxiliary Air Station ( NAAS ) Chincoteague, which was isolated from the rest of the station and separated by a fence.

Projects

Among other things, 1955 Research missiles Rockair McDonnell F2H aircraft were launched from the NAOTS year. The pilot rocket that was launched from a Douglas F4D aircraft, was developed in the late 1950s under the strictest secrecy here.

History

In 1959, NASA took over the Naval Aviation Ordnance Test Station and parts of the station were merged with the Wallops Facility Iceland, which was later renamed Wallops Flight Facility.
