Nathan Marcus Adler

Nathan Marcus Adler ( born January 15, 1803 in Hannover, † January 21, 1890 in Brighton, United Kingdom ) was a German and British rabbi.

Life

Nathan Adler was the son of Jewish scholars Mark Adler ( 1804 Administrator of the Landrabbinats in Hannover). After schooling Nathan Adler studied from 1826 in Würzburg theology and philology and received his doctorate in 1828 at the University of Erlangen.

1828 Adler was appointed ducal rabbi in the Duchy of Oldenburg, 1829, he took over the Landrabbinat Hannover from his father. Here he was - as before in Oldenburg - responsible for the reorganization of the Jewish communities, as well as for the " General synagogues Order" (1832 ) and for the reform of Jewish education (including compulsory education ).

After Adler had in 1842 unsuccessfully applied as a rabbi in Berlin, he was in 1845 elected as the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire and moved to London. His successor in Hanover was Samuel Ephraim Meyer.

In London, Adler founded in 1845 the " Jews' College " and was responsible for the unification of all London synagogues to " United Synagogue " (1868 ). His son Hermann Adler took over his successor as Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth.
