National Archaeological Museum (Bulgaria)

The National Archaeological Museum ( Bulgarian Национален археологически музей, Nazionalen acheologitscheski Musej ) is a museum in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. It has objects from all areas and archaeological epochs of Bulgaria. The museum was founded in 1892 and bears after its inclusion in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the official title of National Archaeological Institute and Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences ( Bulg Национален археологически институт с музей при БАН, Nazionalen acheologitscheski institute s Musej pri BAN).

History

The idea to create a Bulgarian national museum, dates back to the 1840s. The Bulgarian Literary Society operation since its founding in 1869 the establishment of such a museum. First, the museum started its operations as a division of the National Library. 1892, the department became independent. By edict of Ferdinand I. of January 1, 1893 National Museum was built. The museum, which began with an antiques department, a numismatic department and an ethnographic department was housed in the building of the Great Mosque of Sofia from the late 15th century. It was officially opened on 18 May 1905 the audience. 1906, the ethnographic collection was spun off as its own museum. 1949, the museum was founded in 1920, united with the Bulgarian Archaeological Institute and has since been under the name National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as part of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences also a museum and research institute.
