National Capital Region (Canada)

National Capital Region (French: Région de la capitale nationale) is the official name for the Nation's capital, Ottawa, her twin city of Gatineau and the surrounding region. The region covers a total area of ​​4715 km ², with around 1.5 million inhabitants and is located both in the Province of Ontario as in Quebec. Often also the metropolitan Ottawa - Gatineau ( Census Metropolitan Area ) as the National Capital Region called. However, these areas are slightly different.

The National Capital Region was created by Parliament in 1959. The region is faced with a rod of directors (Board of Directors ) that are supported by commissions. The staff is composed of 15 members: a President, a Chief Executive Officer, five members from the Capital Region and eight members from other regions of Canada. The institution does not have a legal responsibility even though the National Capital Commission is deeply involved in political decisions and participated in planning at the National Capital Region.
