National Highways Authority of India

The National Highways Authority of India ( NHAI ) (Hindi: भारतीय राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग प्राधिकरण ) is an independent agency of the Government of India. The NHAI has a central role in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The Agency is responsible for a road network of over 70,000 km.

History

The NHAI was established by the adoption of the National Highway Authority of India Act 1988. In February 1995, the Agency was formally independent.

The NAHI is responsible for the planning and construction, maintenance and operation of National Highways with a total length of 70,934 km ( 2011).

Projects

The NHAI shall implement the order, the National Highways Development Project ( NHDP ). The project is divided into the following phases

  • Phase I: Approved in December 2000 at an estimated cost of 300 billion rupees. These include the Golden Quadrilateral ( GQ ) and parts of the North-South and East-West corridor, and the connection of the most important seaports on the National Highways.
  • Phase II: Approved in December 2003 at an estimated cost of 343 billion rupees: completion of NS - EW corridor and another 486 km National Highways.
  • Phase IIIA: Approved in March 2005 at an estimated cost of 222 billion rupees: four-lane expansion of 4035 km National Highways.
  • Phase IIIB: Approved in April 2006 at an estimated cost of 543 billion rupees: four-lane expansion of 8074 km National Highways.
  • Phase V: Approved in October 2006: six-lane extension of 6500 km ( including 5700 km in GQ ) National Highways.
  • Phase VI: Approved in November 2006: Expansion of 1,000 km of national expressways.
  • Phase VII: Approved in December 2007 at an estimated cost of 167 billion rupees. This bypasses and crossings to be expanded in order to eliminate bottlenecks selected.

The NHAI will help in the implementation of the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North Eastern Region ( SARDP -NE); the program provides for the four-lane expansion of National Highways between the capitals of the states in the North - East of India.
