National Highway (India)

The National Highway network of India is a system of highways with a length of over 70,000 km, which is maintained by the Government of India.

The National Highways Authority of India ( NHAI ) is mandated by the government with the construction, maintenance and expansion of the network agency. The NHAI is responsible for the implementation of the National Highways Development Project ( NHDP ), which describes the development of road and the system. The financing of the National Highways occurs in part from taxes and partly from public-private partnership models.

National Highways are 2 % of the roads in India, but they contribute 40 % of the total road traffic. A large part of the National Highways consists of two-lane roads. The National Highway Development Project provides for the expansion to four and sometimes six lanes. There are plans for the construction of over 30,000 km of new National Highways.

History

The most historically significant highway in India was the Grand Trunk Road. Since the 19th century, the British have expanded the road network in India.

Today's highway system

India has 70,934 km of national highways that connect all major cities and capitals of the states. 2010 there were still approximately 19,000 km of which one-lane roads, but the government has set itself the ambitious goal of expanding all the streets on at least two tracks to 2014.

The connection of the connecting Leh - Manali Highway, the Leh in Jammu and Kashmir with Manali and Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, leads out over the Rohtang Pass via the Taglang - pass and thus is considered the highest highway in the world.

At the edge of the National Highways there are small restaurants and food stalls that offer simple food and drinks and serve as a rest stop.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has adopted a new numbering system for the National Highways in April 2010. The new system will show the progress of the National Highway. Odd numbers are on the national highways that run from east to west and even numbers for those that run from north to south. The number is larger thereby also from north to south and from east to west. The implementation of this new scheme but runs sluggish. ( November 2010)

Future Development

Under Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, the National Highway Development Project was decided. The project envisages an expansion of National Highways and is particularly the expansion of the Golden Quadrilateral and the North -South and East-West Corridor priority.

It will continue to bypass roads built around cities to make the flow of traffic on the national highways as smoothly as possible, and added more roads in the network of National Highways.

The National Highway Act of 1956 was thereby changed so that private -public partnership models are possible in addition to financing through taxes.

Other highways

  • National Expressway is a special class of National Highways, whose use is regulated similar to those of a motorway. For the use of a National Expressway, a fee may be charged.
  • State Highways are in the order below the national highways and are maintained by the respective Indian states. State highways connect most major towns within the states.
