National Highway 4 (NH 4) is a major trunk road in the west and south of the state of India. The route connects four of the most populous cities in India - Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Chennai and has a length of 1235 km. Guides you through the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

NH 4 forms about 90 % of the Mumbai- Chennai section of the Golden Quadrilateral, a cities New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata connecting highway project. In this project, the NH 4 has been expanded from a single carriageway with two lanes in a two-lane road with four lanes. Within the state of Karnataka, the route is also known as Pune - Bangalore Road. The Mumbai- Pune section was supplemented by the Mumbai- Pune Expressway in 2000.

The highway leads in Maharashtra and Karnataka by Satara, Karad, Kolhapur, Belgaum, Dharwad, Hubli, Davangere and Tumkur. Between Bangalore and Chennai, the highway is completed by the National Highways NH7 and NH46.

The circumvention of Pune is a four-lane road with two-lane service roads that run on both sides parallel to the major roadways. The city Katraj is crossed by a tunnel.

NH4 passes in about 40 km distance to the cities of Sangli and Miraj.

Reorganization of the National Highway numbering

The Indian government has approved a new system for the numbering of National Highways in May 2010. The widespread implementation of the new system, which should lead to an easier orientation, however delayed. (November 2011)
