Kolhapur ( Marathi: कोल्हापुर, Kolhāpur ) is a city in the southwest of the Indian state of Maharashtra with approximately 550,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ) far from the state border with Karnataka with good road links to Pune, Bangalore and Goa. It is the capital of the district of Kolhapur and an important center of the sugar cane industry.

Kolhapur lies on the River Panchganga at an average altitude of 544 meters above sea level. NN.

From 1707 to 1949 Kolhapur was the capital of the princely state of Kolhapur, which was ruled by the Bhonsle dynasty. With the collapse of Marathenkonföderation the state took on in 1812 contractual relations with the British.

13 km outside the city at Ujlaiwadi is a regional airport with daily flight to Bombay.

Kolhapur is the birthplace of Maratha film personalities Bhalji Pendharkar, Baburao Painter, V. Shantaram and Ashutosh Gowariker and was the center of the Maharaja of Kolhapur Shahaji II (1874-1922) promoted the Maratha film industry. The film production companies film Maharashtra (1918 ), Prabhat film ( 1929) and Kolhapur Cinetone (1933 ) were founded. Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle also grew up in Kolhapur and began her singing career.
