Ranipettai (Tamil: இராணிப்பேட்டை Irāṇippēṭṭai [( ɨ ) ɾa ː ɳip ː e ː ʈ ː ɛi ], English: Ranipet ) is a city with about 51,000 inhabitants ( census ) in Vellore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It lies on the road connecting Chennai - Bangalore, about 100 kilometers from Chennai.

In Ranippettai many small industrial companies in the chemical, leather and tool maker industry are located. The largest state-owned company is the Boiler Auxiliaries Plant ( BAP) of BHEL ( Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited).

The place is considered as a negative example for groundwater contamination with heavy metals. The American Blacksmith Institute has a list of the most polluted cities and regions issued in October 2006, which also Ranipettai is listed. This tanneries are ( among other chromium compounds and azo dyes ) named with their waste as the main cause.
