Kolar ( Kannada: ಕೋಲಾರ Kolara [ ko ː ː lɑ rʌ ] ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka with nearly 140,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is located in the southeast of Karnataka 66 km east of the capital Bangalore (Bengaluru ), close to the border of the neighboring Federal State of Andhra Pradesh. The city is the administrative center of the district of Kolar.

Kolar was originally known under the name Kuvalala. By about the 4th century the city was the capital of the Ganga kings. In the 11th century Kolar was conquered by the Cholas. Later, the city was subject to the rule of the Hoysala kings of the Vijayanagar Empire and the Sultanate of Bijapur, before it was taken in 1768 by the British. After the Mysore Wars, the British Kolar came back to the Kingdom of Mysore, now a nominally independent princely state under British suzerainty, from. After the Indian independence in 1947 Kolar came to Mysore with the Indian Union.

The main attractions are the Kolar Kolaramma and the Someswara Temple. The Someswara temple was built in the 15th century and represents the Vijaynagar style, while the local goddess of the city dedicated to Kolaramma temple was founded in the 11th century by the Chola king Rajendra I..
