National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology

The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia ( INGV ) (German " National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology " ) is a public geoscientific research facility in Italy, based in Rome.

Tasks and organization

The supervised by the Italian Ministry of Education and Research INGV is geophysics, volcanology, seismology and geochemistry active in the fields. As part of the Italian Civil Protection, the INGV for the seismological and volcanological observation of the Italian territory is responsible. Therefore, it maintains a number of geophysical observatories, seismic stations and Vulkanobservatorien, including the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples and the "National Earthquake Center." These come under branches in Milan, Bologna, Pisa, Naples, Catania and Palermo, or the headquarters in Rome directly.

History

The INGV was founded in 1999. It was created by the merger of the formerly independent Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica with three research institutes of CNR and the Vesuvius Observatory, founded in 1841.
