National Patriotic Front of Liberia

The National Patriotic Front of Liberia ( NPFL abbreviation, English National Patriotic Front of Liberia ) is a rebel group, which has participated in the Liberian civil war.

Led by Charles Taylor, a former government official, the NPFL criticized the frequent cases of corruption and fought as Liberation Organization against the regime of Samuel Doe of the National Democratic Party of Liberia from 24 December 1989. Most fighters of the NPFL came from the Liberian peoples of the Gio and Mano in the north, which were suppressed during the regime of Doe. The NPFL received help from Libya, from Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.

The NPFL is accused of a series of serious human rights violations, including massacres, torture and kidnapping.

In 1997, the organization into a legal political party, the National Patriotic Party, was renamed.
