National Republican Movement for Democracy and Development

Mouvement national pour la républicain démocratie et le développement ( MRND ) was a political party in Rwanda.

From 1992 to 1994 Bernard Munyagishari was Secretary General of the MRND.

Between 1975 and 1994, the MRND was the ruling party of President Juvenal Habyarimana and represented the interests of the Hutu.

The Coalition for the Defence of the Republic was considered the hardline wing of the party under the party president Habyarimana, who eventually split off as a separate party.

Policy

After the first invasion of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF ) in 1990, the party had brought on the initiative of Agathe Habyarimana, the Hutu extremist magazine Kangura out. The magazine fueled resentment against the Tutsi and was a pioneer of the genocide in Rwanda. By 1993 the party called the Mouvement pour le développement républicain nationally. After the death of Habyarimana in April 1994 took over the party hardliners, many of which are among the main actors in the genocide. With the conquest of the country by troops of the RPF tutsifreundlichen under Paul Kagame, the party was overthrown and eventually banned.
