National Theatre of Strasbourg

The Théâtre national de Strasbourg is a historic building at the " Place de la République " in Strasbourg, which was built as the seat of the National Committee for Alsace- Lorraine. It is the only French national theater outside Paris.

The house contains three theaters, costume and stage workshops, rehearsal and administrative spaces. Each season, 15 to 20 pieces are played, focusing of the repertoire is the European theater of the 20th century. They will play alongside pieces in French, each subtitled German, also pieces in German.

History

In the fall of 1886 - Strasbourg belonged to the " National Rural Alsace- Lorraine ", which was managed by the German Reich - submitted by August Hartel and Skjold Neckelmann designs have been awarded for the construction of Elsäßer National Committee building in Strasbourg with the 1st and 2nd prize. From 1888 to 1892 the building was built after the plans of the architect.

After the First World War the house was home to the Conservatory of Strasbourg.

With the de facto annexation of Alsace by the Nazis and the DC circuit of administration and economy, also began attempts to exploit the theater for the Nazi cultural and " ethnic policies ". The former Gauleiter Robert Wagner wanted to make a cultural metropolis of Strasbourg, the theater should be " Empire Theatre " will be a status symbol of Nazi cultural policy. In Wagner, the theater was financially well-equipped and able to successfully increase the number of spectators.

On 25 September 1944 was the meeting hall of the Parliament in the eastern part of the building, the Salle Hector Berlioz, destroyed by bombing. The hall was reconstructed in 1950-1957 by Pierre Sonrel.
