National University of Rwanda

The Université Nationale du Rwanda (English National University of Rwanda, abbreviation ONLY ) is the state with about 11,000 students and about 1,000 employees is the largest university of Rwanda. It has its headquarters in the southern province. The campus of the University is located in the town of Butare.

History

The university was founded as the first institution of higher education in Rwanda on November 3, 1963. 1963 the University had 49 students, in 1993 there were approximately 3,000 at facilities in Butare, Kigali and Ruhengeri. In 1994, the university was closed due to the war in the country and the genocide after students and university employees killed and much of the equipment had been stolen or destroyed. In March 1995, the University of Butare at the site could reopen with eight faculties and two schools. Since then, the University grew rapidly; after the peak of students in 2011 ( about 12,000 ) had about 11,000 students in 2012.

It is a partnership of the Agricultural Research Institute of the University with the " Rwanda Development Board " for the research and development of the 40 km further west Nyungwe National Park, one of three national parks in Rwanda.
