Naturkundemuseum Erfurt

The Natural History Museum of Erfurt is a natural history museum in the Thuringian capital of Erfurt. It is housed in the city center in the building of a former Waidspeichers.

Collections and Exhibitions

Besides the permanent exhibition on the topics of forest, field, city and earth's also changing special exhibitions.

In the atrium of the museum there is a 350 year old oak (Quercus robur), whose roots can be seen on the ground floor and whose crown extends up to the top floor. This tree is 14 meters high and has a maximum trunk diameter of about one meter. The specimen was 1991 like in the Erfurt city forest.

In a vault under the storage building parts of the comprehensive 6500 mineral specimens mineral collection Godehard Schwethelm ( 1899-1992 ) are presented. A special attraction is the subsequent Nachgestaltung of Noah's Ark: In a fluctuating hull many animals are placed. This presentation is to draw attention to the global threat to biodiversity (biodiversity ) carefully.

The botanical, zoological, mineralogical and palaeontological collections are fueled by private donations and independent research.

History

The Natural History Museum was opened in 1922 in the house for stockfish. In 1968 the museum was closed at this point and outsourced collections in temporary shelters. 1995, it was at a new location, opened after four years of construction in a historic back to 1577 Waidspeicher in the Great Ark again.

Friends of

The Association of Friends and Supporters of the Natural History Museum of Erfurt eV is a non-profit development association. One of the statutory objectives of the association include the promotion of scientific research and education, the care of natural history collections and the implementation of scientific events.
