Nazz

Nazz was an American rock band that existed from 1967 to 1970. Since 2006, the band with a new line occurs again.

Band History

Nazz was founded in 1967 by Todd Rundgren (guitar) and Carson Van Osten ( bass) in Philadelphia. Other band members were Thom Mooney ( drums) and Robert " Stewkey " Antoni (keyboards, vocals). Her first appearance they had in July 1967 as the opening act of The Doors.

The band's name comes from the play The Nazz Are Blue by The Yardbirds, released in 1966 on the album The Yardbirds (UK), also known as Over Under Sideways Down ( D, F, U.S. ) and Roger the Engineer ( according to the illustration on the Cover).

In October 1968, their first album Nazz on the market, which - just like the first single Open My Eyes / Hello It's Me - remained commercially without much success. Most of the songs were written by Rundgren. The music of the album was based on British models such as the Beatles, Kinks, The Who and Cream. Open My Eyes came out in 1972 on the compilation Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968. In a meaner retake Hello It's Me Todd Rundgren was a hit for 1972.

Their second album, Nazz Nazz, appeared in May 1969, proposed a new musical direction. Rundgren, author of all the tracks on the album, was based at that time strongly to the music of Laura Nyro. The of Rundgren planned as a double album work (working title: Fungo Bat) was eventually slashed to a long-playing record. Rundgren then left the band and started a successful solo career.

Even Van Osten went his own way. With a rotating cast, the band was initially more concerts, but broke up in 1970. When Todd Rundgren but achieved solo success, the record company decided SGC Records in 1971 to release the originally published pieces of Fungo Bat as a separate album Nazz III, which then appeared a year after the breakup of the band. On some pieces Rundgren was playing singing.

2006 has put together a new group " Stewkey " Antoni, who performs under the stage name " Nazz ".

Note: The band Alice Cooper in 1967 called " The Nazz " before the band's name was changed to " Alice Cooper", to avoid confusion.
