Nel Noddings

Nel Noddings ( born January 19, 1929) is an American educationalist, feminist and philosopher who is concerned with the ethics of care.

Biography

Nel Noddings studied at Montclair State College in New Jersey and earned a Bachelor's degree there in mathematics and sports. At Rutgers University, she received her master's degree in mathematics and finally at Stanford University with a Ph.D. in educational sciences.

Noddings was active in many areas of American education. After her studies she was 23 years as a teacher of mathematics at primary schools and high schools until she received her Ph. D. and than academic and philosopher came into existence. Her main areas were now on the philosophy and theory of education sciences, and ethics of care. In 1977, she was accepted at Stanford University and got 1981, 1982 and 1997 awards for outstanding teaching. For four years she was also dean of the University's School of Education.

After she left Stanford, she taught at Columbia University and Colgate University. She was president of the Philosophy of Education Society and the John Dewey Society. Since 1998 she has retired.

Since 1950, she is married and brought 10 children into the world. She described her early experiences with education and their close family relationships as key experiences to develop their philosophical position.

Work
