Nelson Glueck

Nelson Glueck ( born June 4, 1900 in Cincinnati, Ohio, † February 12, 1971 ) was an American rabbi and biblical archaeologist.

Life

Nelson Glueck studied at the University of Cincinnati and graduated in 1920 with a Bachelor's degree from. After graduate studies at Hebrew Union College ( HUC ), he was ordained in 1923 as a Reform Jewish rabbi. From 1923 to 1926 he worked at the University of Jena on his doctorate. From 1927 to 1928 he studied in Jerusalem in William Foxwell Albright. While studying in the Holy Land, he became interested in archeology. In 1928 he went back to the United States and in 1929 lecturer at the Hebrew Union College. Ins -day Israel, he often returned. 1930 and 1932, he participated in excavations at Tell Beit Mirsim with Albright. 1938 to 1940 he headed the excavations at Tell el- Kheleifeh. From 1947 to 1971 he was president of HUC. In the 50s he explored the civilization of the Nabataeans in Transjordan. In four decades, he located about 1500 biblical places.
