Neos Marmaras

Neos Marmaras (Greek Νέος Μαρμαράς ( m. sg. ) Lit. translation New Marmaras ) is a town on the Greek peninsula Chalkidiki. Neos Marmaras is located on the west coast of the Sithonia peninsula on the Toronaios Bay. Nikiti is located about 23 km north, 20 km south of Toroni Neos Marmaras. The distance from Thessaloniki is 135 km, to Nea Moudania is just 60 km.

Neos Marmaras is situated on four hills of a peninsula at the western foot of the highest mountain of Sithonia, the Itamos ( 811 m height). South of Neos Marmaras extends a small plain at the foot of Itamos up to the point where today the holiday resort Porto Carras is. Northeast of Neos Marmaras is the old, in the meantime abandoned and now again inhabited place Parthenon, which is located on the northwest edge of the Itamos.

The area of ​​today's Neos Marmaras was also the site of the ancient settlement Galepsos. After the decline of the city Galepsos probably in antiquity orphaned the area of Neos Marmaras, which remained uninhabited until 1922. After that settled from the Asia Minor area of ​​settlement displaced Greeks after the Greek defeat in the Greco- Turkish War and founded the village of Neos Marmaras, what of New Marmaras or New Marmaris means.
