Nikiti

Nikiti (Greek Νικήτη ( f sg ) ), also Nikitas ( Νικήτας ( m. sg. ) ), Is a village on the Greek peninsula Chalkidiki. Nikiti is located at the junction of the north coast to the west coast Gulf of Toroni Sithonia peninsula, about 23 km north of Neos Marmaras, 39 km east from Nea Moudania and about 110 km southeast of Thessaloniki.

Nikiti itself has 2,711 inhabitants and consists of two intergrown districts, which are divided by the main road to Sithonia and Ostchalkidiki: Alt- Nikiti, the original village lies on a hill about two kilometers inland from the sea. New Nikiti, the newer part of the village, extending from the main road on to the beach immediately to the sea. With which eleven kilometers south village located Elia Nikiti forms the 2,789 inhabitants village Nikiti.

History

In the field of Nikiti ( according to other sources Neos Marmaras ) was in ancient times, the village Galepsos. It was founded in the 8th century BC by settlers from Euboea. In the 5th century BC people were recruited to serve in the Persian army from Galepsos. After the defeat of Persia in the Persian Wars Galepsos was like many other cities of Halkidiki member of the Delian League. 423 BC was the exit from the Delian League; many residents of Galepsos settled into the emerging Olynthus. Galepsos has completed no later than during the Roman period of its existence. In late antiquity existed on the territory of Nikiti a settlement called Agios Georgios. From this settlement, an early Christian basilica is still preserved in parts.

In the 13th century the area belonged to Nikiti to various monasteries of the "holy mountain" Athos. In the 14th century a small settlement called Neakitou is mentioned for the first time. 1821 Nikiti was destroyed in the battles of the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman occupation power, built 1822-1827 again.

Economy

The inhabitants Nikitis their income today, especially from tourism. The formerly all other outstanding agriculture - especially the beekeeping - has lost much of its importance, but continued performed.

Nikiti is the end point of each year once held Durchschwimmung Gulf of Toroni, which begins in Kallithea Kassandra (distance in a straight line 24 km).
