Nepenthes gracilis

Nepenthes gracilis

Nepenthes gracilis is a species of the genus of pitcher plants ( Nepenthes ). This carnivorous plant is native to the islands of Borneo, Sulawesi and Sumatra.

Description

Nepenthes gracilis is like most Nepenthes species is a perennial climbing shrub. The leaf base ( in pitcher plants often interpreted as leaf blade ) is lanceolate and leathery. The bottom cans are light green and up to 7.5 cm long, the upper pitchers, however, stain with time from light green to dark red and are up to 15 cm long. She looks Nepenthes alata very similar, a feature which both species, however, differs, Nepenthes gracilis has no glandular ridge under the cover.

Distribution and habitat

Nepenthes gracilis inhabits the lowlands of Borneo, Sumatra and Sulawesi. As Tieflandart it thrives in consistently warm climate. It grows mainly in acidic, nutrient-poor soils and avoids dense and shady vegetation.

System

It is assigned to the so-called Lowland Nepenthes. The first description of Nepenthes gracilis was carried out in 1839 by Pieter Willem Korthals in his work over het Geslacht Nepenthes.
