The Nervión [ neɾ'βion ] (Basque: Nerbioi, in ancient Latin Nerva, Greek Νερούα Neroua ) is a river in northern Spain. It rises in the province of Burgos, in the vicinity of the Orduna - pass filter in a waterfall of 270 meters. Later, it flows through the province of Biscay (Spanish: Vizcaya, Basque: Bizkaia), meets at Basauri, with the river Ibaizabal and finally into the Bay of Biscay. Its length is 76 km.
At the height of the Casco Viejo ( Old Town) of Bilbao in 16 km distance to the sea, where the river water mixes with the sea water, the Nervión goes into a Ria and is referred to from then on as Ría de Bilbao.
From the city of Bilbao to the sea, a distinction between the Ria- banks, where clearly distinguish the places on the Ria socially and economically. For historical reasons, the left bank ( Margen Izquierda ) is populated with heavy industry and worker cities, whereas the affluent population inhabited the right bank of the Ria ( margins Derecha ).
