Nesiotites

Nesiotites is an extinct shrew species. The three known species of this genus lived until a few thousand years, the Mediterranean islands.

The animals of this genus were medium-sized shrews, which were similar in physique to Rotzahnspitzmäusen ( Sorex ).

There are three known types:

• Nesiotites Corsicanus lived in Corsica and probably died out 2,500 years ago.
• Nesiotites hidalgo lived in the Balearic Islands and disappeared around 5000 years ago.
• Nesiotites similis was located in Sardinia, the kind died out around 4,000 years ago.

The reasons for the extinction of these animals are not entirely clear, but probably hang with the settlement of their home islands together by the people. Suspected is the one that inadvertently other shrews were introduced (representing the white teeth and the thick tail shrews now live on these islands, are there but only since the Neolithic occupied. ) On the other brought by the people pets such as sheep and goats could the habitat these animals have effectively destroyed.
