Netatalk

Netatalk is a free software suite, the components of the AppleTalk protocol suite under POSIX - compatible operating systems makes it available. For Unix operating systems can be operated as a file, time and print server for Macintosh computers.

Components include:

  • AppleTalk router process and stack with all protocols up to OSI layer 5,
  • AFP ( afpd ),
  • PAP server ( papd )
  • Time Lord, a time server service ( timelord )
  • Front-end programs for services such as AEP (AppleTalk "Ping", aecho )
  • NBP manipulations ( nbplkup, nbprgstr, nbpunrgstr, getzones )
  • PAP client to send print jobs to PAP - capable printers

As the transport protocol, the AFP Server in newer versions not only offers AppleTalk, but also much faster TCP / IP (port 548).

Development

Netatalk has been developed by the Research Systems Unix Group at the University of Michigan and has been migrated in 2000 to SourceForge. In October 2004, Netatalk 2.0 has been released. Innovations were AFP version 3.1 support ( for long file names and UTF -8 character sets, file and volume sizes > 2 GB, compatibility with Mac OS X, integration of CUPS, Kerberos support, and persistent storage of file and directory IDs as well as numerous bug fixes to previous versions.

Currently Netatalk supports the operating systems FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, and Tru64 UNIX.

With version 2.0.5 is compatible with the data Netatalk Time Machine backup software and enables a backup over the network to the Mac OS X version 10.6.8.

Starting with version Mac OS X 10.7 but at least Netatalk 2.2 is required for Time Machine.
