Netherlands Open Air Museum

The Dutch Open Air Museum is an open air museum in Arnhem (Netherlands). It provides an overview of life in the Netherlands over the past 350 years.

History

1912 got together some Arnhem to preserve endangered by the progressive industrialization diversity of rural traditions of the Netherlands. They began with the reconstruction of the estate de Waterberg. In 1918 the museum was opened to the first six houses.

During World War II resistance fighters and some houses were evacuated as a shelter. In the course of hostilities several homes were destroyed and valuable collections of old costumes and furniture were lost.

1987 threatened the museum for visitors defect closure. Since then, efforts are successful to lively presentation. A highlight of this development in 1996 was the inauguration of the tramway. In addition, there are exhibitions, for example, on the Moluccas.

In 2005, the Dutch Open Air Museum has been designated European Museum of the Year.

Building

In the largest and oldest Dutch Open Air Museum are about 80 houses to visit. In addition to several farms and cottages from all parts of the country different workshops and other businesses are (among others a steam dairy, a shipyard and a brewery ), a church of Zealand and a small town with merchants' houses, mom-and-pop store and canals to visit. Between the groups of houses a tram as perverted before the Second World War in Arnhem.

In the peak season, many houses are inhabited and the farms are managed. Several restaurants are open. On a children's farm, children can understand the country life a century ago.
