Netherlands-South African Railway Company

The Nederlandsch -Zuid - Afrikaansche Spoorwegmaatschappij ( NZASM; German: Dutch -South African Railway Company ) was founded on 21 June 1887 the then State South African Republic ( Transvaal Republic ). The concession was until 1894 due to the completion of a rail link from the port of Lourenço Marques to Pretoria.

The route was opened on November 2, 1894 and should allow for the Transvaal 's independence from the British transport routes, with the aim of continuing the line eastward into the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique without touching British territory.

The NZASM referred locomotives mainly of German locomotive builders, since the South African Republic cooperated closely with the then German Reich in political and economic terms.

After the Second Boer War, the NZASM was incorporated into the British Empire and the Union of South Africa from the Central South African Railways on the resolution of the South African Republic and their integration.
