Neuwiedia zollingeri

Neuwiedia is a genus of the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). It consists of eight species of herbaceous plants that are native to tropical Southeast Asia.

Description

The species of the genus Neuwiedia not form a rhizome, roots spring from both underground as above ground from the shoot. They are thin, sometimes hairy, surrounded by velamen radicum.

The ascending, unbranched shoots bear leaves in a loose rosette. The leaves are linear to narrowly oval shaped. The leaf base cuneate to run into an indistinct petiole, which includes the shoot and completely veiled. Along the leaf veins are the leaves crinkled ( Plikat ).

The racemose, erect inflorescence appears terminal, it does not extend beyond the leaves usually. The leaves go through up into smaller bracts, the scion may be occupied in this area with hairs and glandular hairs. The bracts are quite large. The short flower stalk is clearly separated from the oval thickened ovary. The flowers are 'upside down and sit slightly askew on the ovary. The petals are free, somewhat boat-shaped bent and white, cream colored or yellow. The sepals are thin on meaty texture, the petals. A specialization of petals as lip is hard to notice this petal is slightly wider than the other. The column is formed from the fused at the base with one another stamens and style. There are three fertile stamens present. The resulting capsule fruit is oval shaped, with three longitudinal ribs.

Occurrence

Neuwiedia is widespread in tropical Southeast Asia. The northern distribution limit runs through southern China and Thailand. Southeast Windwärts extends the area over Indo-China, Indonesia, the Philippines to New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Neuwiedia species come from the coast to about 1300 meters altitude before. Neuwiedia veratrifolia and Neuwiedia zollingeri are the species with the largest circulation.

The sites are mostly in the shade of evergreen, moist forests.

Systematics and botanical history

Neuwiedia together with the genus Apostasia own subfamily within the orchids that Apostasioideae. This subfamily is the sister group to all other orchids.

The genus Neuwiedia was erected in 1834 by Carl Ludwig Blume. The type species is veratrifolia Neuwiedia. The name honors Neuwiedia Maximilian Alexander Philipp zu Wied - Neuwied.
