Neverita didyma

The bubbles - moon snail or bubble snail navel ( Neverita didyma syn. Glossaulax didyma ) is a snail from the family of moon snails, which is widespread in the Indo-Pacific.

Features

The nearly hemispherical, more broad than long, rather thin -shelled snails House of Neverita didyma, reaching in adult worm with six rapidly increasing whorls 5 to 8.5 cm wide, has a smooth surface with clearly visible growth lines. The upper whorls as well as the upper part of the body are almost flat and intercourse constitute a little projecting conical thread, which occupies almost one third of the housing height. The wide and deep navel is covered in its upper half of a spiral bead, which is light brown in color and is divided by a transverse furrow into two parts. The semi-circular enclosure mouth is crooked, the outer lip sharp and the inner lip with thick calluses. The body is reddish yellow in color, up to the seam down with blue, the tip sometimes quite blue. The base is white, maroon inside the mouth in the upper part dark and white below.

The yellowish brown operculum of the bladder moon snail is thin, horny, and has a few fast-growing turns. It closes the housing completely.

Dissemination and lifestyle

The bubbles - moon snail occurs in the Indian Ocean along the coasts of East Africa, Madagascar and India on, also to Indonesia and the Pacific Ocean to Japan and Australia. Neverita didyma lives on sandy and muddy bottoms in the intertidal zone and below to 100 meters depth. Like other moon snails feed on Neverita didyma of mussels and snails. The prey is includes with the foot and drilled with the radula a hole in the shell.

Use

The bubbles - moon snail is collected for their meat and the housing. In Thailand it is often fished with fishing nets at depths 2-10 meters.
