History

The Company was licensed on 14 October 1868 in Louisiana and 30 March 1871 in Mississippi. The aim was to build a 315 km long railway line between New Orleans and Meridian. The construction was delayed until the early 1880s. 1881 took over the British holding company Alabama, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Junction Railways controlling the NO & NE. Construction began the following year and was completed on 1 November 1883. In November 1916, the J. P. acquired Morgan & Company on behalf of the Southern Railway Company. The route now formed part of the " Queen & Crescent Route" of the Southern Railway between Cincinnati and New Orleans. The operation was carried out from this point through the Southern Railway. In 1969 the company was incorporated into the Southern Railway subsidiary Alabama Great Southern Railroad. The track is still in operation and is part of the Norfolk Southern Railway.

In addition to its own track, the society had track rights on the Alabama and Vicksburg Railway and the Meridian Terminal Company in Meridian, to reach the terminal station, as well as in New Orleans over the route of the New Orleans Terminal Company of Terminal Junction Canal Street to the to achieve its own railway station in the city center.
