New York City Transit Authority

The New York City Transit Authority ( NYCTA, NYCT or TA for Transit Authority ) is a government agency in the U.S. state of New York, which operates public transport in the city of New York. The NYCTA is part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA ) of New York State and is approximately seven million trips daily, the largest public transport authority of the United States. To NYCTA include the following transport systems:

  • The New York City Subway, a subway in New York City boroughs Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx,
  • Staten Iceland Railway ( SIR, originally SIRT ), a standard gauge and electrified railway line in the district of Staten Iceland and
  • The system of New York City Transit Buses.

Originally passed in New York three independent operators of underground networks, two in private hands, which were in competition. In 1953, the NYCTA was founded to unite these network systems under one roof. The current CEO is Thomas Prendergrast.
