Newcastle City Hall

The Newcastle City Hall is a concert hall with 2135 seats in the northern English city of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is listed as a Grade II building.

History

The Newcastle City Hall, was built together with the adjacent urban bath, the City Pool as part of an urban development plan and opened in 1927. The plant built by Harrison & Harrison organ was added a year later. Guest appearances here especially the major British orchestras and internationally renowned soloists such as Yehudi Menuhin and Kathleen Ferrier for the next 40 years. From the 1960s, the pop and rock music collection held in the City Hall: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, as well as originating from Newcastle Animals gave concerts here. On March 26, 1971 Emerson, Lake and Palmer recorded their album on Pictures at an Exhibition at the City Hall, where Keith Emerson played the introductory promenade on the organ in the hall. A large part of the album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith Motörhead was also included here. In addition to the musicians also appeared as comedian Billy Connolly, Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle in recent times.

In November 2012 announced Nick Forbes from Newcastle City Council, he saw because of the budget cut of £ 100 million for the City Hall no long-term future. A petition to save the City Hall with 11,000 signatories and a rethink on the City Council regarding the budget cuts saved the City Hall in February 2013 before closing. The attached bathroom was closed as part of the budget cut in August 2013.

Organ

The organ of the Newcastle City Hall was built in 1928/29, from the workshop Harrison & Harrison. The brochure was designed in collaboration with the architect of City Hall. Due to lack of maintenance it is now in poor condition. The currently Acting Director of the City Hall, Peter Brennan, keeps them for the "Rolls Royce of organs " and representative of the initiative for the restoration of the organ mean after the restoration, it could be one of the finest organs in the world.
