The Newton Navarro Bridge ( also: Ponte de Todos - Newton Navarro ) connects the northern part of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, with its capital Natal. The bridge is one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the country and carries the name of the artist Newton Navarro ( 1928-1992 ). They crossed the river Potengi, which flows north-east of the bridge into the Atlantic Ocean. The expressway will ensure the connection to the São Gonçalo do Amarante airport.

History

Back in 1992, pursued the then administration under the Mayor Aldo Tinoco, a bridge project. However, a project of this magnitude seemed to many builders in regard to funding impossible. It was not until 2003, the government took over the responsibility for project preparation and opened in 2004 a call for tenders.

Construction began officially on October 24, 2004, were delayed in the following year due to various scandals and land disputes, so that the opening date was postponed again and again. The opening ceremony took place from 16 to 21 November of 2007; on the last day of the celebrations, the bridge of its provision was passed.

Description

The 170,000 -ton cable-stayed bridge in the fan system measures in their overall length 1.7 kilometers. Its four main pylons measure 103.45 meters. A total of 62,930 cubic meters of concrete were 70% of them are armed. The total mass of the steel used is 8621526 kg.
