NGC 5291

NGC 5291 is one of about 200 million light years distant elliptical or lenticular HII galaxy, which interacts with a smaller, heavily deformed galaxy, which is nicknamed " the Seashell ". NGC 5291 is located in the western outskirts of Abell 3574 and may be a member of this cluster of galaxies.

The galaxy was first discovered by Longmore et al. further investigated in a study published in 1979 study. In it the nickname " the Seashell " for the interacting galaxy goes back to 5291 seems to fly by at a great speed difference at NGC.

NGC 5291 was discovered on May 8, 1834 the British astronomer John Herschel.
