Ngcobo [ ŋ | ʱ ɔ ː bɔ ː ] (until 2004 Engcobo ) is a town in South Africa's Eastern Cape. It is located in the district of Chris Hani in the community Engcobo whose headquarters it is.

Geography

Ngcobo has 9,835 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). Most residents as their first language isiXhosa.

History

On November 1, 1859 the All Saints, met the head of the amaQwathi, Fubu, on missionaries of the Anglican Association Society of the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. As a result, the mission station All Saints Mission was founded. 1876 ​​was a magistrate seat eight kilometers from the mission station in Engcobo ( isiXhosa; German as: " sweet grass " ) is created. 1879 rebelled and burned amaQwathi mission station and municipal building down. 1881 the Magistrate's Court was reopened.

Near Engcobo was the boarding Clarkebury Boarding Institute, which was attended by Thembu boys, including 1936-1937 by Nelson Mandela. Until 1994 Engcobo belonged to the Homeland Transkei. 2004, the town was renamed in Ngcobo.

Ngcobo is situated on the R81 highway which leads from Mthatha in the near Queenstown. In Ngcobo the R58 towards Aliwal North branches.
