Ngulu (Atoll)

The atoll Ngulu (formerly Matelotas Islands) lies in the southwest of the State of Yap, the Federated States of Micronesia; it is the westernmost country area this Micronesian island state.
Geography
Ngulu located about 80 km southwest of the island of Yap. The atoll is 39 km long and up to 25 km wide, with a total area of 438 km ² but only has a land area of 0.4 km ² (40 acres ) on.
The nine flat coral islands are divided into two groups in the south and north of the atoll. Main islands are Ngulu Iceland and North Iceland. Only Ngulu Iceland, the southernmost and largest island is permanently inhabited. The Riffsegmente the western atoll rim have little water depths, with constantly breaking waves, while on the eastern edge Atoll prevail greater depths, causing the lagoon to the east wind is unprotected.
On the atoll were living in 2008 only 26 people, all on Ngulu Iceland.
Management
The atoll is one of the smallest municipalities ( municipality ) of the State of Yap.
Ngulu belongs to the second electoral district in the state of Yap, one of the five boroughs, along with Ulithi, Fais and Sorol.
Conservation
Northeast Ngulu Conservation Area covers the islands (or Motu ) Taapuyappu, North, and Mesoran. The area is meant for the protection of seabirds and coconut crabs.
