The Niamtougou Airport is located 4 kilometers north of the Togolese city Niamtougou in the district of Baga. The airport is the second largest of Togo and near the biggest airport Lome Togo is the only airport with a paved airstrip.

Construction

With the construction of the airport of Niamtougou was started in 1977; 1980, the airport was completed. The project was financed from the revenues of the Togolese phosphate exports and loans from foreign development aid. The airport should help in the economic development of the underdeveloped northern Togo and the Kara region, which was an important center of power for the coming from the nearby Pya longtime dictator Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo. Use

In September 1986, the airport served the French military as a base for the operation Épervier in Chad, today it functions both as a private airfield and flights for the government as well as members of the Togolese Air Force Base.
