Nicolò Sagredo

Niccolò Sagredo (* September 18, 1606; † August 14, 1676 ) was the 105th Doge of Venice. He reigned from 1675 to 1676.

Family

The Sagredo were among the latest families, the case novisseme that had been taken until after the War of Chioggia in the circle of nobles. However, they traced their family tree back to the Romans. He was the eldest of eight sons of the Procurator of San Marco Zaccaria Sagredo and Paula Foscari, a direct descendant of Francesco Foscari. Of his ten brothers and sisters, two brothers fell during the battle of Candia ( Crete), a brother was Patriarch of Venice. One of his ancestors is one of the saints of the Catholic Church, Gherardo ( Gellért ), abbot of the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio, in Hungary suffered a martyr's death in 1046. The family belonged to the richest of Venice. At the time of his election, they had next to a palace in the city extensive land in Veneto, Istria and Dalmatia.

Life

Sagredo was considered a skillful diplomat and gifted speaker. He had served the city as a diplomat and in administrative offices. As an ambassador at the Spanish court, he was awarded the title of Cavaliere.

The Dogenamt

On February 2, 1675, he was elected by a large majority to the Doge on the first ballot. The Venetians he won by his generosity and his charity work for himself, so that his death was mourned by very little more than one year reign. He died on August 14, 1676 and was buried in the family chapel of the Sagredo in the church of San Francesco della Vigna.
