Nicotinamide is the amide of niacin (vitamin B3). It has large biochemical significance as an important component of coenzymes, NAD and NADP , which are capable of reversible hydrogen transfer. In this case, the pyridine ring is reduced, the nitrogen loses its positive charge.

Use

For people who mainly feed on millet or maize, often occurs on the skin disease pellagra. This disease is caused by inadequate intake of nicotinic acid, nicotinamide or biochemical precursor L- tryptophan. Therefore, nicotinamide is used as a drug ( Nicobion ®).

Nicotinamide reduces the risk for people with severe sunburn later to get an actinic keratosis, by a third, as determined in studies with several dozen patients. The oral dose was 500 mg daily or twice daily and also the risk of skin cancer decreased. For a Phase 3 multicenter study by mid-2013 patients were recruited.

Before the irradiation of patients with cancer can nicotinamide administered in high doses which increase the susceptibility of certain tumors. There is evidence of efficacy against multidrug- resistant bacteria such as MRSA and Pseudomonas.

Animal studies in transgenic mice showed that nicotinamide could prevent the loss of memory of the animals. This raises the possibility that it may also play a role in the treatment of Alzheimer's patients. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a 10% increase in life expectancy was observed by dietary addition of nicotinamide, who traced the researchers involved in increased formation of free radicals and associated oxidative stress.
